Mnemonic Coffee
Curator’s note
Eighteen years of San Diego coffee sit behind this counter, split between two owners whose plan, in their own words, was to pour the coffees of friends they could not wait to show off. Sourcing by friendship sounds soft until the friends are named.
The coffee
The shop buys rotationally instead of settling on a house roaster: Hydrangea out of Berkeley, La Cabra out of Copenhagen, Necessity in Encinitas, Heartwork from across town. Espresso runs on a two-group La Marzocco Linea that came in ten years old with a paint job, alongside an Origami setup for pour-over and French presses for batch brew.
The room
The owners drew the room themselves on a 1970s brief: warm wood paneling, oranges and browns turned up loud, maximalist touches set against classic finishes. Jacob Kennedy of James Coffee did the metalwork and Mattie and Nic Wells of Parlor on Fifth pitched in on the build, and the layout leans on bar seats so the person making the drink stays in the conversation.
