Curator’s note

Eric Stogsdill roasted out of his own garage and sold at Westside farmers markets for years before he and Erin Ward opened Alana's in a former Chinese takeout on Venice Blvd in April 2017, naming it after Eric's daughter. He calls the approach 'snobby coffee without the snobby' — real expertise, delivered without attitude.

Roasts in-house

Alana's roasts in-house on Venice Blvd almost daily, working only with beans that are in season rather than holding a fixed year-round list. Beans come direct from farmers or through a supplier with grower relationships. The current lineup pairs two house blends (10th St. espresso, Mar Vista Morning) with rotating single origins from Guatemala, Mexico, Ethiopia, and Rwanda.

Roasts nearly daily and only in season, pulling shots on a Slayer with directly sourced single origins.

Stefanie Cheng of Studio of Architecture led the interior, and it was drawn around the roaster — the whole roasting process runs in full view of the counter. The machine is the centerpiece here, not back-of-house equipment with a photo of it hung out front.

The room

The shop is a converted Chinese takeout spot on Venice Blvd, opened up so customers can watch the roaster run from the retail floor. Outside it's brick with colorful graffiti and an elephant mural; inside it blends rustic and modern with a back patio people use for both weekend hangs and weekday work.
