Equator Coffees
A Marin roaster's name on the marquee of a restored 1935 theater, across from Main Beach.
Curator’s note
Helen Russell and Brooke McDonnell's roastery took a 2026 Good Food Award for a Colombia Las Flores Thermal Shock Pink Bourbon, and everything poured here is roasted to order up at San Rafael. The room came with the address — a 1935 movie house on the National Register, restored by RDC on Rivian's commission — which makes Equator a tenant in a landmark it did not build.
The coffee
Everything is roasted to order in small batches at the company's San Rafael roastery, off a sourcing list that includes Washed and Natural Geishas from Finca Sophia, the founders' own farm in Panama, and the Colombia Las Flores Thermal Shock Pink Bourbon that took a 2026 Good Food Award. That is the company-wide shelf; which of it reaches Laguna Beach is a question for whoever is behind the counter.
The counter sits inside the 1935 South Coast Theater, restored by Rivian with RDC as architect of record — tiled courtyard, vertical tower, a star-shaped ceiling light, and new murals by landscape artist Ariel Lee. Equator did not author any of it and pours here as a tenant, which is a rare thing to be able to say in a room this good.
