Curator’s note

Erich Joiner hung this room himself, and the photographs on the wall are his own parents' work from their surf-magazine years — a better reason to put pictures up than most shops manage. Order a single-origin pour-over with the Rolex chapati, the pairing Joiner built the place around.

  • A coffee and a chapati to go
  • An early start
  • A quick excellent cup
  • Buying gear for home

The coffee

The beans are brand-wide, off one roasting operation on two Lorings that also feeds the flagship and wholesale accounts, sourced on repeat relationships — EVP of Coffee Marcus Young, over a decade in green sourcing, wants 'coffees that come back year after year.' Bag pages reach the cooperative and washing station, with altitude named (1,760 meters on the Rwanda) but varietal missing from some SKUs and a roast date missing from all of them.

Erich Joiner hung this 300-square-foot room himself — his parents' black-and-white surf-magazine photographs, a commissioned kinetic clock by the Swedish duo Humans since 1982, and a large-scale Dewey Weber print from the LeRoy Grannis estate. That is a serious amount of art for the smallest cafe the company runs, and it is why the room reads as a gallery that happens to sell espresso.
