Goodpeople
A brick-walled Sawtelle room with a 100-seat patio, pouring its own roast.
Curator’s note
The shelf is where GoodPeople says the most — a natural Mokka from Colombia, a washed Heirloom from Guji, a Castillo macerated in Mokka cherries, all of it roasted in house, a habit that started within six months of the doors opening in 2018. The bar has not caught up: brewed coffee is one $4 'Filter Coffee' line with no method and no origin printed against it, so order it and ask at the counter what is in the cup.
The coffee
Roasting began within six months of opening, and the homepage claims 89-point-plus sourcing; the seven retail bags carry country, growing region, varietal and process — Mokka, Castillo, and Heirloom lots washed, natural, and honey — well past origin-only labeling. What the listing never gives is a producer name or a roast date, and the roasting itself moved out to Eagle Rock in 2019.
Chuck Herrera came out of graphic design and drew the shop's logo and look himself; in 2020 he rebuilt the room around a custom bar and a re-routed layout, then expanded into the old Le Saigon next door for a 100-seat patio. Brick runs down one side and the coffee bar down the other, and on Thursdays that patio becomes a comedy room.
