Achilles Coffee Solana Beach
Curator’s note
The name belonged to a boy before it belonged to a coffee company: the founder's son, carried through some of the earliest shifts in his father's arms, which makes the coffee crafted for a warrior line more literal than it first reads. What the company puts in writing is about the people behind the counter rather than the cup, a living wage and a barista track pointed at some of the highest paid in the county.
The coffee
The bar keeps a standing pour-over section of rotating single origins at $4.50 to $5.50 beside a batch brew of the blend of South and Central American coffees, all of it roasted in small batches in San Diego. The bags read farm first: Wilder Garcia's washed Geisha off 23 hectares at 1,800 meters in northern Peru, depulped the same day and held 48 hours in hermetic fermentation before the solar dryers, though the product pages print no roast date and no brew gear is named anywhere.
The room
Inside is a walk-up counter with standing room for a few people, a condiments station and a shelf of whole beans, the whole of it white with the brand's orange run through it. The sitting happens outdoors: half a dozen picnic tables under shade umbrellas set around a fountain, with a few more on a landing above looking out over the highway, which leaves the patio doing the work of the room.
