Provecho Coffee
Curator’s note
Mexican owned is how the Instagram bio signs off, and the buying is what turns that into a claim about coffee: much of what Provecho pours is sold nowhere else. The shop publishes no menu of its own, so what is pouring on a given morning stays between the bar and whoever asks.
The coffee
The bags come off the shop's own Provecho Roasting Lab and name the lot or the grower rather than the country alone: an Oaxaca Sierra Mixteca, an Ethiopia Guji Biru Bekele, a Colombia Red Fruits Co-Ferment. No roast date and no varietal appear on the listing, an odd omission on a shelf this specific.
The room
Jerry Guzmán of Casa 129 designed the buildout: a coffee bar made of plywood, bistro tables topped with terrazzo, colorful stoneware to drink from. It sits in the old mixer room of the Weber Bread Factory, a Logan Heights fixture from the 1950s into the early 2000s, and the giant flour mixer still stands behind the counter wearing a rotating neon logo, which is a cheerful way to treat an inheritance.
