Curator’s note

This is a room built for work first, and the shop is unembarrassed about saying so: the quiet gets protected on purpose, and the Wi-Fi and outlets count as part of what is served. At night the same room goes to DJs and artist takeovers, so that quiet is a daytime policy.

The coffee

The house espresso is a single origin the shop roasts itself, pulled on a La Marzocco, and no manual brew method is named anywhere on the board. Both lots it has put its own label on are Honduran: an Amanecer, washed, at $22 for citrus, grapefruit and molasses, and a honey-process Miel numbered 01 on its neck tag.

The room

Black-painted concrete block runs up to an open timber roof, and one geometric wire-cage pendant with an exposed filament bulb repeats through the room, four over the lounge and three above the bar. Seating runs from upholstered sofas in olive and tan to a bench of stacked cinder block, with an orange perforated-metal speaker cabinet breaking up the dark walls, and nobody's name is on any of it: it looks like the work of the people who run the place.
